Garden Furniture Cushions – What You Sit On Is Important

by Will Morrison on 2011/07/07

Having patio furniture to sit on and relax with your friends and family is a great way to spend an afternoon. The cushion you sit on is important for comfort.

When shopping for a garden patio set you want to pay attention to the cushions. Make sure they are removable and washable. If you can wash them they will look good and last longer. Being able to remove them lets you switch the style and look of your patio as seasons change.

Garden furniture cushions should also be weatherproof. They should be made of materials that do not soak in water and that wipe clean relatively easily. No one wants to sit on a dirty cushion and it isn't always practical to wash cushions before company comes over.

The next feature that is important in your garden furniture cushions is the filler. There are two common types, polyester and high density foam. They are used for different purposes. Polyester filling doesn't soak as much water in because it is loosely packed allowing water to drain easily. This makes it great for outdoor furniture.

High density foam, on the other hand, is better for indoor applications such as a sun room or screened in porch. The foam can soak in water and cause mold and decay if not properly dried. High density foam is also fairly rigid. This may not be very comfortable and tends to compress over time. If it compresses too much the cushion will need to either be replaced or refilled.

Swapping out the cushions on your patio set can really change the theme of your patio. You can get garden furniture cushions in lots of different styles and colors.

Some people change them with the seasons, or at theme parties, to coordinate with other decor elements of their patios.

Make sure to measure your chairs accurately before you buy new cushions to ensure that they are not too big or too little.

A cushion that is too large will hang over the side and not only look bad but will wear out faster. A cushion that is too small will be very uncomfortable to sit on and may flatten out over time as it spreads to cover the space it is placed in.
